Monolith Lapidary - Our Story
What do we do?!
Lapidary is the art of engraving, cutting, and polishing stones and gems. One who engages in this type of work is also called a lapidary, or lapidarist. A lapidarist often creates cabochons ([cab-o-shahn]) which are gemstones that are shaped and polished instead of faceted. This is an ancient technique that was used before the advent of faceting. Cabochons in general are elliptical, domed stones. However, freeform cabochons and designer cabochons have different shapes and surfaces. Freeform cabochons tend to follow the inherent shape of the beginning stone material, whereas a designer cabochon is cut and shaped for a specific purpose or design.
Who We Are
Monolith Lapidary has been an idea in the mind of our head lapidarist, Tom Strong, since 2018. In that time - and for years before - he has been honing his craft while continuing to learn the subtle nuance of each gemstone. As the finished gemstones began piling up and relatives and friends became nauseated at the sheer number of cabochons, pendants, and jewelry, necessity prescribed an outlet. This is that outlet. Through Monolith Lapidary you can get the best that Tom has to offer. When designing cabochons Tom compromises his vision with the stone itself, listening to and feeling out the flow and feel of each unique stone. Each designer cabochon is unique in shape, size, and function. You will smile each time you are complimented on your perfect, unique stone.
